How to install Linux:

What you will need to install Linux:

- HDTV
-USB Keyboard
-USB Mouse
-USB Flash Drive
-You will need Internet Access
-Large external memory such as an external hard drive
-A computer that burns cd's/dvds'

I am going to give you a walkthrough to How To download 'Linux Ubuntu 7.10'.

1. Download this following link 'http://www.tinyurl.com/yotq3g.

2. Burn this file to a CD or a DVD, call this the 'Ubuntu disc' (This is the first part)

3. Download the next link 'http://www.tinyurl.com/2eupvt

4. Transfer this file to a USB flash drive or memory card with the following structure:
Create a folder called 'PS3' and inside this folder create another folder called 'OTHEROS',
and then copy that file you just downloaded into the 'OTHEROS' folder (Otheros.bld)

5. Before we do anything with the disc and flash drive we must BACK UP the PS3. Don't
ignore this option or else you will lose EVERYTHING!! haha

6. I recommend using an external hard drive for the next step, but it depends how much memory
you have used so far on your PS3. You can use normal memory sticks if you want to if the
capacity isn't much.

7. To backup your PS3, go to settings, system settings and then 'Backup Utililty'. Then select
your device to which to backup on. This may take a while dependent on how much you have
to transfer. Some files may not be transferred as some content is copyrighted.

8. Now it's time to format the hard drive!. Make sure you have BACKED UP your hard drive!
I will not be held liable for any loss of data!

9. We will now partition the hard drive which will erase your entire hard drive. First go to settings,
system settings and then 'Format Utility'. Now press 'Format Hard Drive' and then 'Custom'. After
this press 'Allot 10GB to the other OS'.

10. Now press 'Quick Format' and then wait until this is completed.

11. We can now install Linux! To install Linux insert the Ubuntu disc and the Flash Drive which you
put the Otheros on into the PS3. Go to settings, system settings and then 'Install Other OS' which
will then install the Otheros on your Flash Drive.

12. After this go to settings, system settings, default system and then 'Other OS', Confirm the quit
dialogue. In a moments time you will see 'Welcome to Ubuntu 7.10'!

13. By the 'Kboot prompt' type install using the USB keyboard, Next select your language, time zone
and keyboard layouts.

14. You will now see 'Prepare Disc Space'. Select 'Guided - Use entire disk'. After this enter a
username and password and take note of what they are as you will need them later.  After a few
more prompts you will see an installation bar. The installation can take a while but it's worth it in
the end.

15. After the installation the PS3 will reboot. When she starts up again you will see the 'Kboot
prompt' and then press enter to start Linux.

16. Now it's time to change the resolution, oh yes we have to change this! We can't have it looking
like this can we! We will have to set this in HD!

17. To change this hit the applications button at the top, select 'Accessories' and then select
'Terminal'. This will open text box. We want a 720p resolution so what we have to do is type
'sudo/etc/init.d/gdm stop.

18. After you have entered this the screen will turn black and another text box will appear. In this
box type 'ps3videomode - v3 which will change the resolution.

19. You can then test this resolution by typing 'sudo/etc/init.d/gdm start' which will restart the
desktop.

20. Go back to the terminal option and then type 'sudo nano/etc/event.d/ps3videomode'. This
will open another text box. Type 'start on runlevel 2' and then press enter and then type
'exec/usr/bin/ps3videomode - v3.

21. After this press Ctrl and 'o' together which will then save all your changes. After press Ctrl
and 'x' together to quit. Restart the ps3 and then you will have set up a 720p resolution!

22. You have successfully installed LINUX! When you start the PS3 up you will get a 'Kboot
prompt' All you have to do is press enter and the way you go.

23. Guess what you can do now?! You can use the open source software in Linux such as word
processors, internet browsers and even play around with the email applications!

Side note: To swich back to your PS3's normal mode all you have to do is type 'boot-game-os'
at the 'Kboot prompt'. And then if you wanted to go back to Linux just to settings, system settings,
default OS and then other OS. The first operating system that loads up is the last one you used.
